Undocumented Immigrant Dies at Starr County Memorial Hospital

A 33-year-old Salvadoran man passed away at Starr County Memorial Hospital minutes after being detained. According to initial reports Border Patrol agents detained the man at 12:10pm in Roma. Shortly after being taken into custody the man appeared to be having a seizure. Agents called Emergency Medical Services at 12:22pm.
An EMT-certified Border Patrol Agent quickly initiated emergency medical care until EMS arrived at 12:29 p.m. EMS continued emergency care and transported him to a local hospital at 12:45 p.m. Despite all efforts to save the 33-year-old man’s life, hospital authorities pronounced him deceased. As of Monday night, the identity of the man had not been released. CBP clarified that they would not disclose his identity until they received confirmation that the man’s loved ones had been notified. In a statement the agency expressed the following. “The care of those in CBP’s custody is paramount. Consistent with policy, CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility has initiated a review. The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of the Inspector General and the Government of El Salvador have been notified.”
Acting Commissioner John P. Sanders expressed,” A 33-year old Salvadoran man suffered a seizure and passed away after emergency medical personnel attempted to save his life. On behalf of the men and women of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, we extend our deepest condolences to those who are just learning of the tragic death of their loved one.”
